Blog. Real Patient Question: How to Hide Gynecomastia Surgery?

We often respond to questions in the forums on about how patients can hide the fact that they’ve had male breast reduction surgery. We tell people online—as well as our own man boobs patients—that it’s great if you can be honest with a few loved ones you trust, and as for the rest, it’s none of their business!

Telling Your Family About Gynecomastia Surgery

Many young guys find it difficult to talk to their families about their man boobs. Not only is it an embarrassing condition, some also say that their parents will not feel cosmetic surgery is justified.
If this sounds like you, and you live with your parents, we would suggest trying to find a way to talk to them. The first few days after surgery you will need to rest, you’ll have reduced arm mobility and you won’t be able to shower right away. These things can be hard to conceal, and you will be much better off with them in the know.

We don’t mean to make light of the challenge—we understand the subject is a difficult one. You might first find an article on a reputable website like and print out parts of it for your parents. (There’s a story about one of our young patients on this website you might also find useful.) You can write your mother and father a letter about your condition. We also suggest you visit—there are many guys with advice about talking to loved ones.

You can demonstrate that you’re serious about male breast reduction by saving money for the procedure. (Another young man we remember decided to pay for surgery out of his bar mitzvah money when his mom just couldn’t afford the procedure.) Make an appointment to meet with us if you live nearby and invite your parents to come. We have worked thousands of patients and hundreds of families over the years, and we can lead the discussion.
If you’re an adult, and you just do not want to share this experience with your parents, it may be best to stay with a friend for a few days.

How to Avoid Spreading the Word at Work

Work is another story. If your job is relatively strenuous, you will need to arrange for time off. What you don’t need to do is reveal exactly why—telling your superiors and perhaps your HR department that you plan to have a minor surgical procedure should suffice.

If your work is more sedentary, you’re in luck. We often schedule man boob surgery for the middle or end of the week so patients can return to a desk job after the weekend, and so do other plastic surgeons. If you’re concerned that someone will notice your lower energy level for a few days and/or the compression garment beneath your shirt, you can simply say you’ve experienced a strained muscle in your back or a cracked rib. This approach also works well with acquaintances, guys at the gym and so on.

Gynecomastia Surgery Support

You’ll need at least one person to lean on when the day of surgery arrives. Many guys will have their wife, girlfriend, mother, sibling or trusted friend pick them up after the procedure and remain close by for assistance if needed. If you truly want to “go it alone” we can offer services we make available to our out of town patients. We can arrange for lodging near our offices and for a professional to stay with you for one night.

We strongly suggest choosing a practice like ours, where man boobs are treated on a weekly basis. Not only do we have the experience and expertise to give you the results you’re looking for, we understand the anguish you may have suffered due to enlarged breasts. We pride ourselves in giving our patients the highest levels of confidentiality, support and encouragement to go along with a new physique.
