A topic that comes up for most patients who consult us about gynecomastia in New York concerns how to pay for surgery. We also answer questions online about payment options for members of gynecomastia.org, like this recent one:
Do any surgeons offer payment plans?
We understand that the cost of male breast reduction with an experienced, board certified plastic surgeon might seem steep to some people. When you add up the fees for the surgeon, the anesthesiologist and the facility, plus the cost of medications and supplies, the price tag is not trivial. It’s natural to wonder whether there’s any flexibility possible, including payment plans.
When we step a guy through all the options, here’s what we discuss.

Payment Plans

You can absolutely finance gynecomastia surgery in New York with us through Care Credit, one of the leading healthcare credit cards. Like many plastic surgery practices, we don’t offer financing through our office. This is because our expertise lies in delivering safe, satisfying surgical results, not in administering financing programs! Care Credit is a good option for some guys, with a variety of plans that may include a zero interest rate if you can pay off the loan in a short time frame.
You can also use your own credit card to help finance surgery, but Care Credit’s rates tend to be a little lower. In either case you will need a good credit track record, of course.
As many patients know before their consultation, most insurance carriers will not cover the cost of male breast reduction as they consider it a cosmetic procedure. Even in the rare case when a company will pay, the amount they come up with doesn’t come close to covering the true cost of surgery. That’s why virtually no plastic surgeons in the U.S. work with insurance companies when it comes to gynecomastia surgery.
That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try to get coverage, if you’re ready for a battle. You can seek pre-approval if you keep in mind that it’s unlikely to happen. We have even run into cases in which pre-approval was granted, only to see the insurance company ultimately refuse to give reimbursement. If you wish, we will submit a claim to your carrier after surgery. Once in a while one will come through with some kind of reimbursement – a pleasant surprise!
Another Option
When a patient has no way to cover the cost of surgery and can’t or won’t finance the procedure, there is one other option. That is, you can contact a nearby hospital that has a plastic surgery training program. Some accept gynecomastia patients – after an evaluation – and have a resident perform surgery with supervision by a senior surgeon. Going this route usually involves minimal cost to the patient.
If this option appeals to you, keep in mind an important point: the outcome can be a bit of a gamble. You may know that there are few board certified plastic surgeons in the U.S. who truly specialize in gynecomastia surgery. So, not only will you be operated on by a student surgeon who may have never seen a case of man boobs, the senior surgeon may not be a veteran of moob surgery either.
After performing gynecomastia surgery in New York for thousands of guys over three decades, we have seen and heard it all! If we can help you think through financing strategies or any other aspect of your situation, don’t hesitate to contact us.
