Are you in the eager-to-get-in-shape group? The first thing we tell overweight guys who consult us about man boob surgery in New York is, it’s a marathon, not a sprint! This means two things. First, the initial healing period is not the time to go on a crash diet. You should aim for balanced meals that deliver around the recommended amount of calories for you since your body needs plenty of energy and nutrients during this time. Second, as healing progresses you’ll want to make changes in your eating habits that will last a lifetime, not just for a short stretch. Boosting your activity level while eating fewer empty calories is key—as your recovery allows.

Here are some specifics.

Post-Op Fluid Intake

Consuming plenty of fluids is important after surgery, especially in the immediate post-op period. Tissues tend to swell at first and “gobble up” fluid, so drinking plenty of water is a good idea. For healthy alternatives to plain water, try flavored or unflavored soda water, herbal teas and soup or broth.

If you are aiming to drop some weight, you already know you should cut out sugary soda. Also consider limiting fruit juice, which is often full of calories without delivering much in the way of nutritional value.

What to Eat After Gynecomastia Surgery

A good diet to aim for after your procedure will include plenty of protein, Vitamin C and Zinc. Here’s how these nutrients help:


According to the University of Michigan, as one of the body’s most vital building blocks, protein can help prevent muscle loss when you’re healing after surgery. The school’s health system website suggests adding a little extra protein to your diet to avoid healing delays. One way to do this, says the university, is to eat protein-rich foods first at mealtimes.

Protein can also assist you in getting your weight under control. The Healthline website notes that foods rich in protein are more filling than those laden with fat or carbs. Protein also helps keep cravings at bay and boosts metabolism.

Vitamin C

The online journal Wound Management & Prevention outlines the benefits of Vitamin C that make the nutrient essential for proper healing. Vitamin C helps form and stabilize collagen, allowing wounds to close properly. It also provides the strength necessary for new tissues to stretch and hold rather than tear and helps boost the immune system.

Since the body doesn’t store Vitamin C, the journal says it’s important to consume enough fruit and vegetables rich in the nutrient daily. You probably know that citrus fruit is a good source; the website gives other suggestions you might not think of such as strawberries, pineapple and edible pea pods. The great news is that these foods aren’t high in calories!


Considered a “micronutrient,” zinc plays a role in healing similar to that of Vitamin C. Indeed, an article on a National Institutes of Health website (originally published in another journal), states that zinc deficiency can lead to delayed wound healing. While the article may be too technical for an easy read, it includes an informative diagram on the role of zinc in the four stages of wound healing. It’s worth a look.

According to Healthline, foods that are good sources of zinc are generally also high in protein: meats, shellfish, legumes, nuts and dairy products, for instance. Interestingly, chocolate also tends to be high in zinc, although it’s not a great choice for losing weight!
