Whether you have gynecomastia surgery in New York with us or on the other side of the globe with another gynecomastia specialist, one thing’s certain: safeguarding good results is up to you.
We understand that maintaining your new physique may not be top of mind. Before male breast reduction surgery you’re likely to be preoccupied with preparations and with a touch of anxiety about the procedure. Afterwards, we’ve found that many guys are “over the moon” with the outcome and don’t have much mind space to devote to the future. But as we see our New York and New Jersey man boob patients for their final post-op appointment, we try to make sure they understand what they need to do as the months and years pass.
1. Maintain a healthy weight. Even though your surgeon will probably have removed excess fat from your chest, a thin, even layer of fat cells should remain to give you smooth, masculine contours. If you gain weight, those cells can enlarge and presto, moobs may reappear.
2. Watch the drugs and substances. You may already know that some people believe marijuana can be a factor in breast growth, so you may want to be cautious about using it. You may not know that alcohol can also be a trigger, as can heroin, amphetamines and other street drugs. Even some herbal products may contribute to breast growth due to a weak estrogen effect.
Certain prescription drugs can cause enlarged breasts, including medication used to treat cancer, ulcers, psychosis and even hair loss. If you take medication for a health condition or are considering a new treatment, it’s best to talk to your plastic surgeon and primary care physician about possible side effects including gynecomastia.
Read our post from last year for an overview of gynecomastia causes. If you’re looking for very detailed information, you can find a comprehensive article from American Family Physician here.
3. Make informed lifestyle choices. We’ve already discussed drugs and substances, but steroids deserve a warning all their own. We find that many guys are eager to get to the gym after surgery, excited to work on getting in great shape now that they have a new shape to work on! If this is you, avoid the temptation to try steroids to build muscle. Steroids are known to cause breast gland growth and disrupt the whole endocrine system. They are just not worth the risk, in our opinion, especially for guys who have already invested in male breast reduction surgery. A good workout regimen and a healthy diet including lots of protein should be all you need to develop an even better appearance.
Of course, the first thing you should do to prepare for a future without big breasts is to follow your plastic surgeon’s post-op instructions to the letter. We hand our New York and New Jersey man boob patients a detailed checklist to help with a smooth recovery—the most important item being to rest and allow the body to heal. It is unlikely you’ll cause long-term damage by doing too much too soon, but it is very likely you’ll prolong the recovery period.
