If you have been researching gynecomastia and male breast reduction surgery for some time, you probably know that pinpointing the cause of a particular case can be tricky. Perhaps you’ve concluded the same thing gynecomastia experts know: there’s much the medical profession understands about man boobs and much more still to learn.
In our three decades of working with guys with gynecomastia in New York, we know more than the average plastic surgery practice. That’s why even though we may not be able to determine what triggered your case, we still think it’s important to consider the possible causes. Here’s why.

Medical Conditions

Enlarged breasts can be a symptom of an underlying medical condition, some benign and some not. Influences on the pituitary gland, such as tumors and Klinefelter’s syndrome, can impact the production of testosterone and contribute to gynecomastia. Breast tissue growth can also be a byproduct of thyroid issues and kidney or liver failure. Breast cancer is even a possibility, though remote.
Since our expertise is plastic surgery, we would not attempt to diagnose a medical condition such as one of these. We do know enough, however, to ask pertinent questions and explore with you whether your moobs may have a medical cause. We can discuss the implications of hormone-related conditions and refer you to an endocrinologist. For other possible diseases, we would have you check in with your primary care physician.

A number of medications can cause gynecomastia. These include some antidepressants and anti-anxiety drugs, heart medications, antibiotics, ulcer medications and others. This is why we will ask you about drugs you may be taking during your consultation.
Some medications may present you with a choice. For instance, products that can be prescribed to treat hair loss, such as Propecia, are associated with gynecomastia. Similarly, anabolic steroids used by some athletes and body builders are well-known triggers for man boobs. If you use any of these medications, you’ll need to think about whether you wish to discontinue them.

Lifestyle Choices

Street drugs such as amphetamines and heroin include man boobs in their long list of side effects. Most patients we treat with gynecomastia in New York do not use substances like these. On the other hand, alcohol use can also associated with gynecomastia, and marijuana is considered by many plastic surgeons to be a likely trigger (though this has not yet been proven). It’s important to be honest with us about lifestyle choices like these. You don’t need to be embarrassed—we’ve heard it all!
A few herbal products, such as those with a high content of lavender or tea tree oil, may contribute to gynecomastia because they do have a weak hormone-like effect on the body. If you have man boobs and use products like these, it’s safest to find substitutes that don’t contain these ingredients.

No Known Cause

If you’re among the hundreds and hundreds of guys we’ve worked with who cannot begin to guess why they have enlarged breasts, do not worry. Frankly, for the majority of patients we treat for gynecomastia in New York, we can find no apparent cause for the condition. If you choose to undergo male breast reduction with us, your man boobs will not return.
